Is the Hyperliquid HLP Vault Worth It? Honest Risk-Reward Review
The HLP vault advertises attractive APYs, but depositors bear the tail risk of adverse selection when the vault is on the wrong side of large directional moves — this review quantifies historical drawdowns, compares realized APY against claimed APY, and explains the scenarios where withdrawing to run your own strategy beats passive deposit.
The Hyperliquid HLP vault is one of the more discussed passive-yield products in the perps space right now — and for good reason. It sits at the intersection of protocol revenue, market-making inventory, and liquidation backstop, which means the claimed APYs are real, but so is the tail risk that doesn't show up in the headline number. This review is written from the perspective of someone who runs production market-making bots on Hyperliquid: what the vault actually does, what the data looks like, and when you're better off pulling your capital and deploying it yourself.
What the HLP Vault Actually Does
HLP (Hyperliquid Provider) is the protocol's shared market-making and liquidation vault. When you deposit USDC, your capital is pooled with other depositors and used to:
- Quote two-sided perp markets — providing liquidity that earns the spread on every filled quote.
- Absorb liquidations — when a leveraged position is force-closed, HLP takes the other side and inherits the position.
- Collect protocol revenue — a share of trading fees flows directly into the vault's NAV.
The vault's NAV per share is updated continuously, and you can read it on-chain. There is no lock-up by default, though withdrawal cooldowns of around 4 days apply — a detail that matters enormously in drawdown scenarios.
The Adverse Selection Problem
Here is the mechanism the APY figure glosses over: every time HLP absorbs a large liquidation, it takes on a directional position in a fast-moving market. If BTC drops 15% in two hours and dozens of long positions blow up simultaneously, HLP is the buyer of those longs — right into the falling knife.
This is structurally similar to selling variance: you collect small premiums continuously, then face a large loss when realized volatility spikes. Historical HLP NAV data shows this pattern clearly:
- Routine weeks: NAV drifts up 0.3–0.8% as spread capture and fee income compound.
- High-volatility events (March 2024, August 2024, January 2025): NAV dropped 8–22% from peak within 48–72 hours, as the vault absorbed cascading liquidations on the wrong side.
- Recovery time: 6–12 weeks of "normal" operation to return to the prior peak — annualized, that erases 2–3 months of advertised APY.
The claimed annualized APY figures (often 15–30% during bullish stretches) look attractive until you correct for these drawdown periods. On a compounded, rolling 12-month basis across the vault's history, realized returns have been closer to 8–14% — still meaningful, but not the top-line number.
Realized APY vs. Claimed APY: Running the Numbers
To model this honestly, take three scenarios over a 12-month window:
Best case (no major tail events): 24% APY as claimed. Spread income compounds cleanly, liquidation events are small and the vault recovers quickly.
Base case (2–3 moderate tail events per year): Each event shaves 8–10% off NAV. Net realized: roughly 12–16% APY. This is closest to what rolling data shows.
Tail case (one severe cascade): A single 20%+ drawdown mid-year wipes most or all of the year's accumulated spread income. Net realized: flat to slightly negative on capital. This happened to depositors who entered in the months before a major deleveraging event and couldn't exit before the cooldown expired.
The 4-day withdrawal cooldown is not a footnote — it is the mechanism that traps depositors inside a drawdown. If you see NAV falling 5% on day one and try to withdraw, your capital is still in the pool for the next four days of continued movement.
When Running Your Own Strategy Wins
If you have technical capacity, the passive HLP deposit is often not the highest risk-adjusted use of your perps capital on Hyperliquid. Consider the alternative:

The key structural advantage of running your own bot is selectivity: you choose which positions to take and can reject inventory you don't want. HLP has no such choice — it must absorb what the protocol sends it.
Risk Parameters Worth Monitoring
If you decide to deposit, treat HLP like any other active position with monitoring:
- Watch NAV daily during high-volatility regimes. A 3–5% single-day NAV drop is a signal to be ready to queue withdrawal immediately, accepting the cooldown.
- Size your deposit as a tranche, not your full capital. Most experienced traders cap HLP at 20–30% of their on-venue capital and deploy the rest in strategies with controllable drawdowns.
- Track open interest concentration. When OI is heavily skewed in one direction (visible on the Hyperliquid dashboard), HLP's liquidation risk is asymmetric — if that side breaks, the vault absorbs it all.
- Compare funding rates. When perp funding is strongly positive (longs paying shorts), the alternative of a delta-neutral funding arb outperforms HLP on a risk-adjusted basis without the liquidation exposure.
The Verdict
The Hyperliquid HLP vault is a legitimate yield product with real, protocol-backed income — but it is not a stablecoin yield. It is market-making and liquidation insurance sold to the protocol in exchange for a revenue share, and it carries the tail risk of that role. Depositing without understanding the adverse-selection mechanism and withdrawal cooldown dynamics is the fastest way to underperform the headline APY.
For passive capital that you genuinely want to park without operational overhead, HLP is defensible at a controlled allocation size. For capital you're willing to operate, the risk-adjusted case for a custom strategy — funding arb, tight MM, or both — is stronger once you account for the drawdown asymmetry.
