Is the Hyperliquid HLP Vault Worth It in 2025?

A production-level review comparing HLP vault yields against perp funding farming, Drift vaults, and centralized structured products — with drawdown history and fee drag analysis to help allocators make an informed decision.

The Hyperliquid HLP vault has attracted serious capital since the L1 launched — at peak it held north of $300M USDC and was generating yields that looked compelling against anything else on-chain. But capital from yield chasers has compressed those returns, a few rough drawdown periods have shaken allocators, and the competitive landscape has matured enough that "just deposit into HLP" deserves more scrutiny than it was getting in 2024.

What HLP Actually Does

HLP (Hyperliquid Liquidity Provider) acts as the backstop market maker and liquidation engine on Hyperliquid's native perp exchange. When a trader opens a position, HLP is typically on the other side for a slice of it. It earns the spread, a share of liquidation profits, and in quiet markets it also earns funding when it is net short and rates are positive.

The critical thing to understand is that HLP is not a passive yield product in the sense a money market fund is. It takes directional inventory risk. When the market trends hard in one direction — say BTC rips 20% in a week — HLP accumulates a short book that bleeds until liquidations clear the worst overleveraged longs. That is the structural risk you are getting paid to carry.

Historical Yield and Drawdown Numbers

Through most of 2024 HLP ran annualized returns in the 15–25% range on deposited USDC, with the vault NAV climbing relatively steadily. The crypto bull run from October 2024 into Q1 2025 delivered the first meaningful stress test: HLP drew down roughly 8–12% from peak NAV during the most violent upswing legs, before recovering as funding rates spiked and liquidation revenue surged.

By mid-2025, with the vault larger and spreads tighter, stabilized annualized yields have compressed to the 8–14% corridor depending on market regime. Volatile months still spike above that; low-vol months sitting in tight ranges have printed closer to 5–7% annualized. If you are underwriting this at 12% you are roughly right on an expected-value basis, but you need to stomach peak-to-trough drawdowns that have touched -15% intraday on the worst days.

Comparing Against the Alternatives

Perp funding farming on Hyperliquid itself — opening a delta-neutral position by going long spot and short perp — has historically yielded 20–40% annualized when funding is hot, but the carry flips negative without warning and requires active management or automation to stay profitable. It is genuinely higher Sharpe than HLP in benign conditions, but operationally heavier.

Drift Protocol vaults on Solana offer a similar liquidity-provision mechanic with comparable yield ranges, but Drift's insurance fund backstop is smaller and the liquidation engine is less battle-tested at scale. Drift also has smart-vault options where third-party managers run directional strategies — a different risk profile entirely.

Centralized structured products (think Ribbon/Aevo covered calls or Genesis-style lending desks) used to compete at 10–20% yields. Most of those are either gone post-2022 or have repriced to 6–10% with tighter terms. HLP beats them on yield but adds smart-contract risk that a custody-held structured note does not carry.

The honest comparison: HLP is roughly a 15% gross / 10–12% net proposition in normal markets, with left-tail risk that correlates with the most painful moments in crypto — exactly when you least want a drawdown.

Fee Drag and Withdrawal Mechanics

HLP charges a 10% performance fee on profits with no management fee — that is the headline. What catches allocators off guard is the withdrawal queue. Exits are not instant; in high-stress periods when many LPs want out simultaneously, the queue can stretch to days. This is by design — it prevents bank-run dynamics — but it means HLP is not a liquidity reserve. Do not park money here that you might need to deploy on short notice.

On fee drag: at 12% gross yield, the performance fee takes roughly 1.2 percentage points, landing you at ~10.8% net before gas (negligible on Hyperliquid's L1). That is a clean structure compared to vault-of-vault architectures on Ethereum that can stack 2–3 layers of fees.

Who Should Actually Allocate Here

HLP fits allocators who:

  • Have a 12+ month time horizon and can ride through drawdown periods without forced redemptions
  • Understand that yield spikes during volatile markets come with inventory risk that has already materialized, not in advance
  • Are comfortable with smart-contract risk on a relatively young L1 — Hyperliquid has not been exploited, but the codebase is newer than Ethereum blue-chips
  • Want on-chain, self-custodied exposure rather than a counterparty relationship

It is a poor fit if you are sizing it as a "safe yield" position within a conservative portfolio, or if your liquidity needs could force a withdrawal during a drawdown window.

The Automation Angle

Where things get genuinely interesting is combining HLP deposits with an active layer on top: monitoring funding rates, sizing HLP allocation dynamically based on market regime, and rotating into pure funding farms when spreads justify it. That kind of systematic management — the kind we build for clients at TierZero — turns HLP from a static deposit into one leg of a broader yield-optimization strategy rather than a standalone bet.

Blindly depositing and forgetting works until it does not. The allocators doing this well are treating HLP as one instrument in a broader toolkit, not a destination.

If you are evaluating HLP as part of a systematic on-chain yield strategy and want a second opinion on sizing, structure, or what to pair it with, get in touch — we have run these in production and can help you model the real risk-adjusted numbers.
